"The World" stinks!

Monday night we went to a 311 concert that Larry got free tickets for from work. We like 311, so we were expecting a great time.(Plus, it would be another baby-free date!) Things started off bad when Snoop Dogg was the opening act. We had known he would be there first, and weren't in the mood for a lot of cursing and songs about pimps and ho's, so we showed up late hoping he would be finished by the time we got there. He wasn't and we had to endure at least another hour of very vulgar language and loads of people getting wasted and smoking pot. (There were cops there, so I'm not sure why people were openly allowed to get away with the pot smoking- but whatever). By the time 311 came on people were so wasted that they were falling all over the place. The music was good, but the atmosphere was really lame. I haven't been in a lot of situations where you see people falling down drunk and acting like idiots. I've gotten used to living in my sheltered little corner of the Salt Lake Valley and living my clean Mormon lifestyle. I felt like we were suddenly thrust out into "The World" when we went to this concert, and I was just disgusted. There was a sweaty, drunk guy who kept stumbling into our booth and falling all over the place while spilling beer on us. He comes up behind me, puts his sweaty head on my shoulder and starts whispering and slurring in my ear with his beer breath. Then he goes over to Larry and does the same thing while Larry is trying to get him to leave. He almost starts a fight with some guys in front of us because he's touching their girlfriends, and that's when we decided to leave. On our way out some creepy guys were leering at me and yelling "I love you!" I was sooo creeped out! The whole atmosphere just felt so wrong and I realized I am either getting really old or really prudish, but I don't care. I realize that I like living my sheltered life in my quiet little neighborhood, in my quiet little town, and I'm so glad I have the gospel in my life. Without it I could be one of those trashed people acting like an idiot and getting laughed at by everyone including my friends. I don't want to seem close-minded or offend anyone, but everything about the situation just felt so awful. While some people may claim that the gospel limits our freedoms and keeps us down, I've found that the exact opposite is true, and this experience just served to reaffirm that conviction.

Smiling when 311 comes on- thinking that we're in for a fun time
